The Re-Emergence of Stepping Into Sound
A Mindful Musing on movement, music, ocean and community
There are some ideas that arrive suddenly.
And then there are others that seem to live quietly inside you for years, waiting for the right time to emerge.
Stepping Into Sound is one of those for me.
As I slowly emerge from my own season of cocooning, I can feel myself becoming excited about creating again. But I’m noticing that I don’t want to create simply for the sake of doing more.
I want to create experiences that feel meaningful.
Experiences that bring us back into our bodies.
Back into connection.
Back into community.
Back into ourselves.
And so, Stepping Into Sound is beginning to take shape again—this time down two slightly different paths.
There will be monthly evening silent disco sessions: a space to put on the headphones, step away from the outside noise and simply move.
And then there is something I have been dreaming about for a very long time…
Stepping Into Sound by the ocean.
A beautiful combination of yoga, meditation, silent disco, movement, ocean and community at Rabbit Island.
One of my absolute favourite places to be.
Movement without choreography
There is an ever-growing conversation around the importance of embodied movement and the relationship between our bodies, emotions, nervous systems and wellbeing.
But when I talk about movement, I’m not talking about getting the steps right.
There is no choreography to master here.
In fact, I’m interested in almost the opposite.
What happens when we stop following choreography and start listening to the choreography of our own body?
What does your body want to do when nobody is telling it what it should look like?
Maybe you sway.
Maybe you dance.
Maybe you stretch.
Maybe you shake.
Maybe you close your eyes and barely move at all.
Maybe you move wildly and take up space.
There is no right way.
It is about allowing the mind, heart and body to connect and giving ourselves permission to move in a way that feels right for us.
Not performing.
Not comparing.
Not worrying about what the person beside us is doing.
Just listening.
There is something incredibly powerful about movement when we allow the ego to move out of the way.
And then there’s the ocean…
This part feels particularly special to me.
Rabbit Island was one of the first places I came when I visited Nelson on holiday, long before this beautiful part of the world became home.
Having spent many years surfing back in Australia, the ocean has always felt like a place where I can reconnect with myself.
There is something about being near water that changes things for me.
The sound of the ocean.
The expansiveness of the horizon.
The feeling of sand underneath bare feet.
Salt air on your skin.
That sense of being reminded that we are part of something much bigger.
For years, I have imagined bringing together some of the things I love most in that space.
Yoga.
Meditation.
Music.
Embodied movement.
Bare feet on the earth.
The ocean.
And people.
So the idea of gathering at Rabbit Island, moving together beside the ocean and creating something that allows people to connect both inwardly and with one another feels incredibly special.
Because perhaps the most important part is community
As much as Stepping Into Sound is about connecting with yourself, it is also about connecting with others.
There is something powerful about doing these things together.
We can arrive as we are.
We can move differently.
We can have completely different experiences.
And yet, for a little while, we are sharing the same space, the same music, the same earth beneath our feet and the same ocean beside us.
There is something rather beautiful about that.
Connection without expectation.
And as always with anything I facilitate, everything is optional.
You can move.
You can rest.
You can dance.
You can sit.
You can take your headphones off and listen to the ocean.
You can close your eyes.
You can keep them wide open.
You get to listen to yourself.
Because that is really what sits at the heart of Stepping Into Sound.
Not learning how to move.
But perhaps remembering how to listen.
To the music.
To the ocean.
To your body.
To yourself.
And maybe, somewhere amongst all of that, to each other too.
I’ve been dreaming about parts of this since I first landed in Nelson, and it feels pretty special to finally be bringing them together.
